Description
The Florida Panhandle is hiding some of the darkest, strangest, and most forgotten towns in America. From a village where residents sawed off their own limbs for insurance money to a reform school where nearly 100 boys vanished, these 12 towns will make you rethink everything you thought you knew about the Sunshine State.

Ever heard of Vernon, Florida? In the 1950s and 60s, this tiny town of under 1,000 people was responsible for two-thirds of ALL loss-of-limb insurance claims in the entire United States. Residents were deliberately amputating their own hands and feet for insurance payouts, and local juries refused to convict a single one of them. It earned the nickname "Nub City," and filmmaker Errol Morris was literally assaulted trying to make a documentary about it.
And that's only number seven on this list.
We also cover Marianna's Dozier School for Boys, where forensic teams excavated 55 unmarked graves. The 1816 Negro Fort massacre near Sumatra, where a single cannonball killed 270 people. Chattahoochee's notorious state mental hospital, where patients were buried under numbered markers instead of names. A boomtown called St. Joseph that went from 6,000 people to a mass grave in one summer. And Bristol, Florida, where a retired lawyer charged tourists a dollar to see a piece of what he claimed was Noah's actual Ark.
The Florida Panhandle is beautiful. It's also absolutely unhinged. This video covers all of it.
