Description
🔗 93 things every Appalachian grandfather knew. How many are left in you?
https://burlsizemore.com
Every Monday of my boyhood started the same way, with my grandmother in the yard before daylight building a fire under a black iron kettle. She did it in the rain and she did it in the snow. In thirty one years of Mondays that I know about, that woman missed exactly one.
Washday is gone now. It went away so quietly that nobody my age can tell you the year it died. But the old washday had nineteen parts to it, and every one of them looks strange now. The spring branch under the sycamore. The thirty gallon kettle. The battling bench and the hickory paddle. The rain barrel she guarded like money. The crock of soft soap that shook on the shelf. The zinc board and the glass board. Two rinse tubs. Bluing. The wringer. The punching stick. The line prop. The clothespin apron. Cooked starch. Long johns frozen so stiff they stood up by themselves in the kitchen. The sprinkling bottle. Three sad irons tested with a little spit. Feed sack dresses. Monday beans. And the Monday rule.
Some of them look like hard work for no reason. A few look like plain foolishness. And four of them were flat better than anything you can buy at the store today.
I will tell you which Monday she missed, and why. And I will tell you about the dent in the rim of that kettle, and whose name is on it.
My grandmother never wrote down one word of any of it. My grandfather did write, down the margins of our farm ledger, right beside the price of corn. A few years back I sat down with that ledger and wrote out ninety three of the things he knew how to do with his hands, the fixing and the making do, the way he would have told it to you if you had been standing in the barn with him.
If your people had a washday, tell me about it down below. What day was it, what was on the stove, and what did your grandmother call the stick she stirred the clothes with?
