Description
Can chanting God’s name truly remove the sins we have committed? If a person knowingly commits Adharma and later chants the name of God, does that automatically erase the consequences of those actions? Or does true Nama Smarana require repentance, surrender, devotion, and a genuine transformation of the heart?
In this video, we explore the deeper scriptural meaning of Bhagavan Nama Smarana through the Upanishads, Mahabharata, Bhagavad Gita, Srimad Bhagavatam, Padma Purana, and Valmiki Ramayana.
We examine the spiritual significance of sacred sound, the importance of constant remembrance of God, and the powerful story of Ajamila from the Sixth Canto of Srimad Bhagavatam. Although Ajamila called out the name “Narayana” while calling his son, the Divine Name protected him from the Yamadutas. But his story did not end there. After hearing the discussion between the Vishnudutas and Yamadutas, Ajamila deeply regretted his past actions, changed his life, devoted himself to God, and eventually attained the Supreme destination.
This raises an important question: Can someone deliberately continue committing sins while depending on the power of God’s name to remove them? The scriptures clearly distinguish between sincere repentance and knowingly using the Divine Name as an excuse to continue Adharma.
The Bhagavad Gita explains that even a person who has lived a deeply unrighteous life can transform through exclusive devotion to God. However, true devotion must lead that person toward Dharma. Real Bhakti does not justify wrongdoing; it changes the direction of one’s life.
This video also explores the deeper difference between removing the consequences of sinful actions and removing the inner tendency that repeatedly pushes a person toward those actions. The greatness of Nama Smarana is not merely that it can purify past sins, but that sincere remembrance of God can gradually transform the mind, weaken sinful tendencies, awaken repentance, and guide a person toward Dharma.
Scriptural references discussed include:
Chandogya Upanishad
Mandukya Upanishad
Kali-Santarana Upanishad
Mahabharata – Anushasana Parva
Vishnu Sahasranama
Bhagavad Gita
Srimad Bhagavatam – Sixth Canto
Padma Purana
Valmiki Ramayana

The central message of this video is simple: the Divine Name is not a license to commit Adharma. Bhagavan Nama Smarana is a spiritual path that can awaken repentance, purify consciousness, transform one’s choices, and ultimately turn a person away from sin and toward God.
