The "El Chapo of Europe": The Rise & Fall of Britain's Most Feared Crime Lord

To European law enforcement, he was known as the "El Chapo of Europe"—a ruthless criminal mastermind who commanded transatlantic narcotics routes, supplied the Italian mafia, and ruled through cold-blooded fear. His name was Robert Dawes. Rising from the former mining town of Sutton-in-Ashfield during the violent turf wars of "Shottingham," Dawes outmaneuvered rival gangs to build a multi-billion-pound global cartel. Operating from the luxury enclaves of Spain's Costa del Sol, he insulated himself behind military-grade encrypted mobile networks, semi-autonomous European smuggling cells, and institutional corruption across South America. He believed he was untouchable—until a 1.3-tonne shipment of pure cocaine on an Air France flight triggered Operation Enamoured, an international joint sting by the UK's National Crime Agency (NCA), the French Police Nationale, and the Spanish Guardia Civil. When Dawes sat down in a luxury Madrid hotel lounge in 2015, a hidden covert microphone captured the fatal mistake that brought down his entire empire. Watch the full investigation into the rise, covert surveillance hunt, and ultimate downfall of Britain's most elusive cartel boss.
