How One Man’s Failed Dream Led to the Modern Computer

Discover the fascinating history of the computer and the story of Charles Babbage, the visionary who imagined a programmable mechanical computer long before modern computers existed. In this documentary, we explore how calculation errors in mathematical tables inspired Charles Babbage to design the Difference Engine and later the revolutionary Analytical Engine. You’ll discover how Babbage developed ideas similar to memory, processing, punched-card instructions, loops, and conditional operations—and how Ada Lovelace helped explain the possibilities of his machine. The story then follows the evolution of computers from Babbage’s mechanical designs to Herman Hollerith, Alan Turing, Colossus, ENIAC, transistors, integrated circuits, the Intel 4004 microprocessor, early personal computers, Apple, IBM PCs, laptops, smartphones, and today’s AI-powered computers. From giant mechanical machines and room-sized electronic computers to powerful devices that fit inside our pockets, this is the incredible journey of how computers evolved and changed the modern world.
