Description

In the autumn of 1944, with the war in Europe looking nearly won, the U.S. Army crossed the German border into the Hürtgen Forest, a dense tangle of pine and ravine near Aachen that screened the dams on the Rur River. It became the longest battle American troops ever fought on German soil. The forest cancelled out everything the Americans were good at. Armor couldn’t maneuver, fog grounded the aircraft, and German shellfire burst in the treetops to rain steel into the foxholes below. Division after division was fed into the trees and worn down over eighty-eight days of fighting. The campaign cost roughly thirty-three thousand American casualties, and many of the men who survived came away convinced none of it should have happened. This is the story of the Battle of Hürtgen Forest: what the army was fighting for, what it cost, and why one of its bloodiest campaigns is also one of its least remembered.
