The “Forbidden” Antique Furniture Cleaning Trick That Works in 10 Minutes

That dark seat on an old chair might not be dirt. A walnut armchair sold for $88,200, and the auction house said a refinish would have cut that to less than half. Conservators sometimes clean old wood with a cotton swab and their own spit. The home version uses warm water and takes about ten minutes: pick a hidden spot, swab it, read the swab, and wait. It tells you whether you're looking at grime or the original finish buyers pay for, and on painted furniture it tells you to put the swab down. Twelve pieces show the difference, from a refinished oak sideboard that brought $2,100 to a painted 1803 Pennsylvania dower chest that sold for $280,000 and had never been touched.
