Potatoes, onions, green chilies, fresh coriander, and mint have flourished in the pots. Susmita, standing on the terrace opposite, and Sania, from the adjacent terrace, have also stepped out and are chatting with Khushbu... Susmita (35, Surprised): Oh Khushbu, you’ve done such amazing gardening on your terrace! You’ve even grown potatoes and onions in the pots, and the green chilies and coriander look so lush and fresh. Sania (32, Happy): Yes, Susmita, she’s practically set up everything needed for aloo parathas right here on the roof. Khushbu (24, Happy): Yes, *Bhabhi*, everyone in our family loves piping hot aloo parathas. It’s difficult to go to the market in this incessant heavy rain, so I decided to grow everything right here on the terrace. Narration: After chatting, Khushboo gathers green chilies, fresh coriander, and some spring onions into a bowl just as it starts to rain. She carries the vegetables down the stairs. In the living room, her father-in-law Kamlesh, mother-in-law Asha, sister-in-law Kirti, and husband Viraj are sitting on the sofa, chatting. Asha (52, affectionate): Oh dear, were you up on the terrace tending to your world of plants all this time? Khushboo (24, cheerful): Yes, *Maanji*, the area around the plants needed cleaning. Look, I’ve brought down such fresh coriander, chilies, and potatoes. Kamlesh (58, troubled): You’ve brought excellent vegetables, dear, but please feed us something quickly. I’m absolutely famished. Kirti (20, petulant): Dad, why would *Bhabhi* just make *anything*? In this rainy weather, I only want to eat piping hot *aloo parathas* made by *Bhabhi*. Viraj (27, cheerful): Yes, Kirti, it’s pouring outside anyway; what could be better than crispy *parathas* in weather like this? Narration: Khushboo takes the bowl into the kitchen and tries to light the gas stove, only to discover that the cylinder is empty. She comes out and speaks to her mother-in-law. Khushboo (24, worried): Oh *Maanji*, the gas cylinder has run out. Viraj (27, concerned): Don't worry, everyone; I’ll put on my raincoat right now, head out, and fetch a cylinder from the agency. Kirti (20, dismayed): But *Bhaiya*, by the time you get back with the cylinder, we’ll be in a terrible state from hunger. Khushboo (24, affectionate): Kirti, while *Bhaiya* goes to get the cylinder, I’ll make piping hot *parathas* on the earthen stove in the backyard. Asha (52, cheerful): "Yes, daughter-in-law; you come from a village and have plenty of experience cooking on a traditional earthen stove. You even kept one ready for this very purpose." Narration: Viraj leaves to get a gas cylinder, while Khushbu heads to the open backyard, where an earthen stove sits in the corner of a sheltered area. She lights a fire using dry wood and places a pot of potatoes on to boil. While the potatoes cook, she finely chops onions and green chilies; then, she transfers the boiled potatoes into cold water and quickly peels them. Just then, Kirti arrives... Kirti (20, cheerful): "Bhabhi, let me peel the potatoes—I'll do it quickly and mash them well, too. You can get the onions and the tempering ingredients ready." Narration: Kirti starts peeling the potatoes while Khushbu sautés the tempering spices in a pan; she then adds Kirti’s mashed potatoes and mixes everything together. The rich, earthy aroma of roasted spices and the potato mash fills the entire courtyard. Khushbu (24, affectionate): "Kirti, the potato mash has turned out delicious. While it cools down a bit, go get the large mixing platter from inside and knead the dough." Narration: Kirti kneads the dough and brings it out, and Khushbu places a heavy iron griddle on the stove. She stuffs the potato mixture into a ball of dough, rolls out a round paratha, places it on the griddle, and cooks it until it is crisp. Kirti (20, cheerful): "Bhabhi, you carry on cooking the parathas; I’ll quickly go to the kitchen, grind some green chutney, and bring it back. It will make the parathas taste even better." Narration: Kirti heads toward the kitchen; meanwhile, out on the road, Viraj is making his way back in the rain with an empty gas cylinder strapped to the back of his bike. On the way, he runs into two
