Description

In the eternal battle against the demon Mahishasura, Hindu mythology tells of how Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh prayed to Goddess Tuljabhavani, invoking her cosmic energy and seeking her awakening to vanquish evil. At the renowned temple in Tuljapur, Maharashtra—home to the sacred Chalmoorti (movable idol)—this divine narrative comes to life through a unique annual tradition known as Manchaki Nidra (or Nidrakaal). Spanning a total of 21 days annually, the Goddess rests on a special silver bed (Manchaka) across three distinct phases that mirror cosmic cycles and divine rest: Ghor Nidra (Deep Sleep): Lasting about 8 days prior to Sharad Navratri (from Bhadrapada Krishna Ashtami to Amavasya), representing the period of profound rest before awakening to fight the demons. Shram Nidra (Tired Sleep): A 5-day period following Dussehra (Ashwin Shuddha Dashami to Kojagiri Pournima), symbolizing physical rest after her epic victory over Mahishasura. Moha Nidra (Illusion Sleep): An 8-day winter period (Poush Shukla Pratipada to Shukla Ashtami), before she awakens once again on the ninth day. During these sacred phases, devotees offer profound reverence by letting the Mother Goddess rest in absolute tranquility, symbolizing the eternal balance between divine power (Shakti) and peaceful rejuvenation. #Tuljabhavani #ManchakiNidra #Kulswamini #Navratri #DeviBhagwati #HinduMythology #Tuljapur #Shakti #DivineMother #SpiritualTraditions
