The Duronto Express was introduced in 2009 as one of Indian Railways’ most ambitious premium train concepts — fast, distinctive and originally designed to connect major cities with almost no commercial stops. Within just a few years, the Duronto network expanded rapidly across India. Its unique yellow-green livery, unusual coach combinations and point-to-point operating philosophy gave it an identity completely different from conventional express trains. But behind this successful beginning was a story that gradually changed. Low occupancy on certain routes, fare revisions, conversions, commercial stoppages, route extensions and changing railway priorities slowly transformed the original Duronto concept. Some services disappeared completely, while others survived with an identity very different from what was imagined in 2009.
