Description

Ancient buildings do not always tell the truth about their own age. A structure can look centuries older than it really is because its builders deliberately revived an earlier style. Another may contain stones already ancient when they were reused, while a later restoration can make separate construction phases appear to belong to a single moment. Tombs borrow the language of temples, churches inherit forms from vanished religions, fortresses preserve layouts created for a different kind of warfare, and monuments sometimes survive only because later generations gave them an entirely new purpose. This creates a strange problem: the closer a building resembles the past, the harder it can become to determine which past it actually belongs to. Some of the most intriguing ancient sites are therefore not mysteries because we cannot see enough, but because what we can see belongs to several different moments at once. #mystery #archaeology #ancientmysteries #unsolvedmysteries
