On October 24th, 2005, the storm that still holds the Atlantic's all-time pressure record came ashore on the southwest coast of Florida. But it wasn't the landfall that broke South Florida. It was the eye – sixty miles wide by the time it crossed the peninsula, wide enough to hold an entire metropolitan area inside an hour of blue sky and dead air, and wide enough that the back half of the storm arrived like a second hurricane against people who believed the worst was already behind them. What followed became the largest power failure Florida had ever experienced.
