Description
They gave us some of the most powerful voices in soul music. They sang about love, poverty, struggle, injustice, heartbreak, faith and the world around them. But behind some of these unforgettable records were stories of violence, illness, personal battles, tragic accidents and deaths that shocked the music world.
In this R&B ZOOM documentary, we travel through the golden era of soul music from the 1960s through the 1980s and uncover the stories behind 10 extraordinary soul singers whose lives changed dramatically after creating some of their most memorable records.
From Darrell Banks and “Open the Door to Your Heart”, to Donny Hathaway's “The Ghetto,” Minnie Riperton's “Lovin' You,” Marvin Gaye's “What's Going On,” and finally Otis Redding's “(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay,” every chapter reveals a different story hiding behind a familiar song.
Some faced violence.
Some battled devastating illnesses.
Some struggled privately while performing for millions.
And some never lived long enough to see their final records become classics.
But this documentary also separates fact from speculation. We are not claiming that every artist was murdered or targeted because of their music. Instead, we examine what can actually be documented — the events, the circumstances, the music and the human stories behind the records.
And NUMBER 1 may be the most heartbreaking of them all.
Otis Redding was only 26 when he died in a plane crash. Weeks later, his final recording, “(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay,” became a NUMBER 1 hit — a song he never lived to hear the world celebrate.
This is more than a countdown.
These are the stories behind the songs.
Welcome to R&B ZOOM.
