Description
In 1964, Fannie Lou Hamer—a former Mississippi sharecropper who had been evicted, threatened, and brutally beaten for challenging racial oppression—stood before the Democratic Party and confronted its leadership over the exclusion of Black voters.
Her testimony exposed the reality of Mississippi's voting system. But when the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party challenged the state's all-white delegation at the Democratic National Convention, party leaders offered a compromise instead of full recognition.
Hamer refused to accept two seats as a substitute for meaningful representation.
This documentary follows her journey from the cotton fields of Mississippi to one of the defining political confrontations of the American civil rights movement. It examines the retaliation she faced, the formation of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, President Lyndon B. Johnson's response to her testimony, and the convention's decision.
What happens when a political party's commitment to democracy is tested by the people it has excluded?
Watch the full story of Fannie Lou Hamer, whose fight for voting rights challenged not only Mississippi's racial order but also the national political establishment.
