Description

In this video, I take you through every type of star in the universe, from the most common stars you've never even seen, all the way to the strange ones that shouldn't be able to exist. We start with the red dwarfs, the tiny, dim stars that make up most of the universe, then our own Sun, a perfectly average yellow dwarf, and the calm orange dwarfs that might be the best place to look for life. From there they get bigger and stranger: blazing blue giants that burn out in a cosmic blink, swelling red giants that will one day swallow the Earth, and the enormous red supergiants like Betelgeuse. Then we reach the dead stars, the incredibly dense white dwarfs, city-sized neutron stars, spinning pulsars, and magnetars, the most magnetic objects in existence. And we finish with the impossible ones, including quasi-stars powered by a black hole at their core, and black dwarfs that the universe is still too young to have ever made. By the end, you'll see that everything that lives and dies up there is decided by a single thing, and that you are, quite literally, made of stars. ▶ More explainers every few days.
