The First Humans on Mars May Live Underground

Mars has a thin atmosphere and lacks a global magnetic shield, leaving the surface exposed to radiation. Natural caves or lava tubes could offer sheltering material for future explorers. Editorial note: Martian caves and radiation risks are real scientific subjects, but an underground human habitat is a proposed solution, not an established Mars mission plan.
