“Like Having a Bus on Top of You”: Surfer Hit by a Whale

Jason Breen, 55, was wing surfing off Mona Vale, north of Sydney, when a young humpback whale landed right on top of him. He was dragged 20–30 feet under the water. “It’d be like having a bus on top of you underneath the water. You can’t fight a bus,” he says. What may have saved him: the whale snapped the leash tying him to his board.
