Description
We Tested Coffee From McCafé, 7-Eleven, Gloria Jean’s & 7 More Chains | These FAILED
A flat white a day can cost Australians around $1,800 a year.
But when you’re paying café prices, how much do you actually know about the coffee in your cup?
In this investigation, we put 10 major coffee chains through a simple transparency test:
☕ Where do the beans come from?
☕ Where are they roasted?
☕ And is the price fair for what you’re actually getting?
From Starbucks and Wild Bean Café to McCafé, The Coffee Club, Zarraffa’s and Hungry Jack’s Jack’s Cafe, the answers were surprisingly different.
Some chains clearly name the countries their beans come from and where they’re roasted.
Others rely on words like “premium,” “ethical” or “100% Arabica” while giving customers very little they can actually check.
In this report, we look at:
✅ which chains FAIL our transparency test
✅ which chains name their bean origins
✅ which tell you where their coffee is roasted
✅ why café coffee remains expensive even as global bean prices have fallen
✅ what Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance certification actually tell you
✅ the 30-second coffee check you can use before ordering
✅ which chains offer the strongest combination of transparency and value
✅ and why a $2.50 coffee ended up taking our Number 1 position
This is NOT a taste test.
A chain that fails our test could still make coffee you enjoy. We’re measuring something much simpler: how clearly the company tells customers what they’re paying for.
And the results might change the way you look at your morning coffee.
