Description
What your blood type says about your ancestors — and what it does not. Almost everything you have been told about blood type and ancestry is wrong, and the whole idea started in one army camp in 1918. Some blood markers really do record where a population came from. Your own blood type is not one of them, and this is exactly where the line falls.
QUESTIONS THIS VIDEO ANSWERS
• Can your blood type tell you your ancestry?
• Does type O blood mean Native American ancestry?
• Where does Rh negative blood actually come from?
• Why do Basques have the most Rh negative blood on earth?
• Which blood markers really do record ancestry?
• Does a DNA ancestry test tell you your blood type?
• Is the blood type diet real? Does blood type affect personality?
WHERE THIS STARTED. In 1918, at an Allied camp outside Salonika, a Polish physician named Ludwik Hirszfeld and his wife Hanna tested more than 8,000 people from 16 nationalities — the only place on earth where that was possible. The frequencies differed sharply: 46% type A among the English, over 40% type B among men from India. Then Hirszfeld compressed it into one ratio and called what he was measuring "biochemical races." Within a decade, race scientists across Europe were drawing blood group maps from it. Hirszfeld was Jewish. He was forced into the Warsaw Ghetto in 1941 and escaped over the wall in July 1942. His only daughter did not survive.
WHAT BLOOD REALLY DOES RECORD. Three markers carry real signal. The Duffy-null type sits above 99% across western and central Africa and under 1% in Europeans and East Asians; roughly two thirds of Black Americans carry it, because the protein it switches off is the door one malaria parasite uses to enter red cells. The Diego antigen runs near 49% among the Kaingang of Brazil against 0.5% in Europeans, and was used in the 1950s as evidence the Americas were peopled from Asia. And Rh negative peaks in the Basque country at 30–35%, against about 16% across Europe.
THE BASQUE STORY HAS CHANGED. Basques were long described as a Palaeolithic relict population carrying an older gene pool. A 2019 study of 271 ancient Iberians ended that: by about 2000 BCE incoming Steppe peoples had replaced roughly 40% of the peninsula's ancestry and nearly all its male lines. Their Rh negative figure is drift and isolation, not ancient survival.
WHY YOUR OWN TYPE TELLS YOU NOTHING. Every main type occurs in every large population, and no version of the gene belongs to one people. Type O is the most common type on earth, which is why "type O means Native ancestry" fails. The proof sits on one continent: type O approaches 100% among Indigenous peoples of South America, while around 80% of the Blackfeet of Montana are type A. US donor data from over 3 million people shows the same overlap — 45% type O among white donors, 57% among Hispanic, 50% among Black.
WHERE THE FREQUENCIES CAME FROM. Disease. In Peru in 1991, infected people with type O were almost 8 times more likely to need hospital treatment for cholera, and 73% of severe cases were type O — and the Ganges delta, cholera's homeland, runs unusually low in type O. But type O also protects against the worst malaria. No type ever won, because different diseases pulled in opposite directions.
OLDER THAN YOUR SPECIES. The A and B difference is shared with gibbons, whose line split from ours over 20 million years ago. Whatever your blood type records, it is not your family.
