God bless, friends. 🌿 That wrinkled sweet potato sitting in your pantry might be worth more than you think. Instead of throwing it away, you could turn it into dozens of new plants without buying slips from a garden center every spring. Here in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, we have been using this old-fashioned method for generations. And you do not need a big garden to try it. The 6 steps, from fall to harvest: 1. CHOOSE THE MOTHER NOW: Save 2–3 firm, healthy sweet potatoes from the fall harvest. Try Beauregard, Covington, Georgia Jet, or purple varieties. 2. CURE & STORE THEM RIGHT: Cure freshly harvested potatoes, then store around 55–60°F. Never refrigerate the potatoes you want to sprout. 3. WAKE THEM UP IN SPRING: Start 8–10 weeks before planting. Half-bury the potatoes in damp soil, keep them at 75–85°F, and watch the shoots appear. 4. TURN ONE SLIP INTO THREE: Twist off 6–8-inch shoots, cut at the nodes, and let the mother potato produce another batch. 5. PLANT WITHOUT WAITING FOR ROOTS: Harden off your slips, plant in warm soil about 12 inches apart, and keep them watered until established. 6. BUILD A SWEET POTATO TOWER: No garden rows? Grow 15–20 slips in a compact wire-and-straw tower, with careful watering and room for the vines. One saved sweet potato can provide slips for an entire garden bed. Choose the right variety for your climate, and you may never need to order those plants again. 🌱 Learn how to grow and preserve your family's food through all 12 months in my book, Eat Fresh 365 Days a Year: https://eliashomestead.shop Subscribe for more forgotten Amish gardening methods, and tell me below: What state are you growing in, and have you ever grown sweet potatoes from slips? #SweetPotatoes #GrowYourOwnFood #AmishGardening #Homesteading #SelfSufficiency #GardeningTips #FoodSecurity Disclaimer: The content in this video is for educational and entertainment purposes only, sharing traditional practices and personal experiences.
