Description
Angry Birds became the most downloaded mobile game in history and reportedly helped generate billions of dollars. But just over a decade later, Rovio was hiding the original game, struggling to create another major franchise, and selling the company to Sega.
So how did one of the most recognizable brands in mobile gaming become almost irrelevant?

In this video, we examine the rise and fall of Angry Birds and the business decisions that transformed Rovio from a tiny Finnish game studio into a global entertainment company—and then caused its value to collapse.
You’ll discover how Rovio survived dozens of failed games, adapted an idea from Crush the Castle, and used smaller international markets to push Angry Birds to the top of the App Store. We also break down Rovio’s expansion into merchandise, movies, licensing, free-to-play gaming, and more than a dozen Angry Birds spin-offs.
But Rovio’s greatest success eventually became its greatest weakness.
The company became so dependent on Angry Birds that it removed the original game from app stores after it began competing with Angry Birds 2. Despite successful merchandise, movies, and mobile games, Rovio was never able to build another franchise with the same cultural impact.
After going public at a valuation of nearly €900 million, Rovio’s stock collapsed. Sega eventually acquired the company for approximately €706 million—before recording a major impairment related to the acquisition.
