Description

Islamists Never Expected Denmark to Do THIS! - At three thirty-three in the afternoon on the fourteenth of February, 2015, a twenty-two-year-old gunman opened fire on a café in central Copenhagen. Inside, a panel called "Art, Blasphemy and Freedom of Expression" was underway, with the Swedish cartoonist Lars Vilks as its main draw. A film director named Finn Nørgaard tried to stop him and was shot dead. Nine hours later, the same gunman turned up outside Copenhagen's Great Synagogue, where eighty people were celebrating a bat mitzvah, and killed the volunteer guarding the door. His name was Dan Uzan. He was thirty-seven. It was, almost move for move, a copy of the Paris attacks five weeks earlier. Hit the cartoonists, then hit the Jews. And the plan, as far as anyone can reconstruct a dead man's plan, was to make a small, famously cartoon-obsessed country finally go quiet, and turn on itself while doing it. The gunman, Omar Abdel Hamid El-Hussein, had been out of prison for two weeks when he did it, released early after serving one year of a two-year sentence for a knife attack, and had posted his allegiance to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi on Facebook hours before he picked up a weapon. Police shot him dead outside a train station in Nørrebro before dawn. Four other men were later charged under Denmark's anti-terrorism laws for helping him dispose of the weapon and move through the city in the hours between the two shootings.
