Two Anuṣṭup ślokas stand as mirror images on either side of the Guru's name, like two slopes around Meru. The phrase itself echoes the Upaniṣadic and Gītā vision of the Light beyond darkness. The first śloka is the dawn of Praṇava: the Cit-sūrya, the sun of consciousness — silent, ever-new, formless — the Ātman that is Brahman. The second śloka is its reflection: the same light sung aloud as Udgītha, the Supreme Light in its own true form (Chāndogya Upaniṣad 8.3.4), the one who lifts the seeker out of the darkness of ignorance, the unmoving pole-star of Praṇava who carries across. Form and formless, silence and sound, darkness and light meet in one Guru — and the verse ends in "Nirañjana, Ananta...
