Description
There is an envelope arriving at your house this month that decides what you pay for your health care for the whole of next year. It is thick, it is grey, it looks like the other post from the same company. And here is the fact almost nobody tells you: if you do nothing about what is inside it, everything in it happens to you anyway on the first of January, and you are held to it for twelve months.
It is all disclosed in advance, in writing, by law. That is the whole problem. The notice arrives in a form almost nobody reads, and the system treats not reading it as agreement. Silence is a decision, and this is the one time of year you are allowed to answer it.
🔹 1. Five things worth ten minutes. Inside those forty pages, only these matter: your premium; your deductible and what you pay when you use the plan; the drug list; the network; and the maximum you can be asked to pay out of pocket in a year. Everything else is legally required padding.
🔹 2. The default is the trap. Do nothing and you are not dropped — you are enrolled automatically in next year's version of your plan with every change applied, and nobody asked you to agree to any of it. People tell me they have been in the same plan for six years. Usually they have been in six versions of a plan.
🔹 3. Your medications. Four things can happen to a drug you take: it can be removed, moved to a higher tier, given prior authorization, or given step therapy. Check every prescription against next year's list, not this year's. If something is dropped, ask for the transition supply and, if needed, a formulary exception — a dropped drug is a problem to be solved, not a wall.
🔹 4. Your network. The doctor list is rewritten every year too, and nobody telephones you about it. Call the practice and ask whether they are contracted with that plan next year — do not trust the directory, printed or online, because it is often out of date. A cheaper premium with your specialist removed is not cheaper.
💡 Your date is October 30 — enough time for one sheet of paper and one comparison, and a month ahead of everybody who waits for December. Theirs is December 7.
