Description

Most fans can tell you that space stations in Star Wars are a bad idea because they can't move. What almost nobody asks is why every government in every era keeps building them anyway. If immobility is such an obvious flaw, someone should have stopped writing the checks thousands of years ago. In this video, we break down the real reason defense stations keep showing up in orbit, and it has almost nothing to do with firepower. The answer runs through the politics of Imperial Moffs who hoarded military assets out of fear of each other, through shipbuilders who sold prestige to Senators instead of strategy to admirals, and through a procurement system where the Death Star and the Golan station are the same purchase at different price points. We walk through the Siege of Coruscant where not one Golan fired a useful shot, the battle in Wedge's Gamble where Rogue Squadron punched one hole in the line and the rest of the stations couldn't do a thing about it, and the Bilbringi shipyards where every platform was destroyed and the entire installation was abandoned because it wasn't worth holding without them. We cover why stations work perfectly in peacetime and collapse the instant a real war starts, why losing a battle in a station-defended system is worse than losing anywhere else because the stations either get captured or leave the thing they were protecting worthless, and we end with the one angle nobody talks about: the possibility that the Empire knew all of this and kept building them because a station bolted into orbit is the one thing that guarantees your own fleet can never retreat. If you want the full case for why space stations make more sense as chains than as weapons, this is the one to watch.
