Description

In March 1980, Mr. Beard taped a sign over the register at Beard's Store in Marlinton: "Everything on this shelf costs more next year. Your receipt won't." I was the girl at that register, and I kept the receipt. I've kept every one since. I'm Ruth Sawyer. I've kept a logger's house on Sawyer Ridge, Pocahontas County, West Virginia, since 1977, and every grocery receipt since then is in a coffee can on the kitchen table, with a household ledger for every year on the shelf behind me. Nine things on those receipts went up more than anything else this house ever bought, and I stopped buying every one of them. For each one I read you the receipt, what it cost then, what it costs now, and what I use instead. Together those nine were $13.12. Today they're $76.89. One of them went up sixteen times over, and it's made of paper. Tell me in the comments one thing your mother or grandmother stopped buying and what she used instead, your county, and what she called it. The one with the most comments is the one I open the can for next. Next time: 12 things this house has never paid for in 49 years. Ruth Sawyer is brought to life with the help of modern AI tools. The prices, the receipts and the methods are real and checked. This isn't a homemaking channel. It's a ledger somebody kept for 49 years. Write it down, friend. Paper remembers. #frugalliving #savemoney #inflation #oldways #homemaking #appalachia #westvirginia #grocerybudget
