Description
What It Was Actually Like Living Inside a Hooverville Shack in 1932
During the Great Depression, thousands of Americans lost their jobs, homes, and savings. For many families, the only place left to live was a makeshift settlement built from whatever materials they could find.
These communities became known as Hoovervilles.
In this video, we step inside what daily life could have been like inside a Hooverville shack in 1932. We explore how families built shelters from scrap wood, cardboard, metal, and other discarded materials, how they stayed warm, what they ate, how they found water, and what happened when winter or illness arrived.
Life in a Hooverville was more than just poverty. Families had to improvise almost every part of everyday life while dealing with unemployment, overcrowding, poor sanitation, hunger, and constant uncertainty.
What did a typical shack actually look like? How did people sleep, cook, and stay warm? And how did families survive when there was almost nowhere else to go?
By looking at photographs, historical records, firsthand accounts, and the realities of Depression-era America, we reveal what living inside a Hooverville shack could really have been like in 1932.
