Description

In 1952, two priceless, jewel-covered crowns disappeared from Brooklyn’s Regina Pacis shrine only days after being placed above the Virgin Mary and infant Jesus. These were no ordinary church decorations. Created from jewelry donated by local families and personally blessed by Pope Pius XII, the crowns represented years of sacrifice from Brooklyn’s Italian-American community. But the thief had unknowingly robbed a church protected by one of New York’s most powerful Mafia bosses. Joe Profaci—the feared founder of the crime family later known as the Colombos—had helped finance the shrine and considered the robbery both a religious insult and a personal humiliation. According to underworld accounts, Profaci ordered his men to recover the crowns and find whoever had taken them. Suspicion eventually fell on Brooklyn jewel thief Ralph “Bucky” Emmino. Days later, Emmino was found dead. Soon afterward, the missing crowns mysteriously returned to the church through the mail. Parishioners celebrated their recovery as a miracle—but the streets of Brooklyn whispered a much darker explanation. Did Joe Profaci personally order Emmino’s murder? How did the Mafia locate the stolen treasure before law enforcement? And was the crowns’ miraculous return actually the final act of a carefully executed mob punishment? This is the strange true story of the thief who believed he was robbing a church—until Joe Profaci’s Mafia found him first.
