Description
Between 1990 and 2001, Microsoft developers hid secret games, bizarre jokes, and entire 3D worlds inside their software. A flight simulator buried inside Excel. A first-person dungeon called "The Hall of Tortured Souls" hidden in a spreadsheet. A full movie-style credits sequence tucked inside Windows 95 that played with music. A pinball debug mode that let you drag the ball with your mouse. And a Notepad bug so strange it sparked conspiracy theories about hidden political messages.
Sixteen Easter eggs from the era when shipping a Microsoft product meant hiding something fun inside it first. Solitaire was never meant to be a real game — it existed to teach people how to use a mouse. The Minesweeper cheat borrowed a magic word from a 1970s text adventure. And after Excel 2000's hidden racing game, Microsoft officially banned Easter eggs forever — because hidden code is untested code, and untested code is a liability. The fun era lasted exactly one decade.
