Description
Chamorro DNA reveals a story the textbooks got wrong. In 1710, a Spanish census counted just 3,539 Chamorro people on Guam, about ninety-three percent fewer than before colonization. Yet ancient DNA from two skeletons in Ritidian Cave, buried 2,200 years ago, matches the maternal lineage carried by Chamorro women today. In this video, geneticists reveal what the DNA shows about where the
Chamorro came from, how they crossed roughly 2,300 kilometers of open ocean, and why their ancestry stands apart from almost every other population in remote Oceania.
We break down the 2022 Science study of 164 ancient individuals, the discovery that ancient Chamorro carry no Papuan ancestry, and why that overturned computer simulations that said the Philippines route was impossible. We look at haplogroup E2a, the latte stones, the Spanish reduction, and evidence pointing to a matrilocal society. We also explain what the research does not prove: three research groups still disagree on the exact island of departure, and a possible Marianas role in the later settlement of Polynesia remains only a hypothesis.
