Description

What did Jesus mean when He warned the church in Pergamum about “Satan’s throne”? More than 2,000 years ago, the Book of Revelation described Pergamum as the place **“where Satan has his throne.”** The ancient city stood high above the surrounding valley and became an important center of political, religious, and imperial power. At the heart of this mystery is the **Altar of Zeus**, a monumental structure that once dominated the ancient city. Some researchers and interpreters have connected its imposing appearance with the mysterious phrase **“Satan’s throne”** in Revelation. But was the altar really what Jesus had in mind? The story becomes even more fascinating centuries later. Archaeological excavations uncovered major portions of the Pergamum Altar, and sections of the monument were transported from the Ottoman Empire to Berlin, where the structure was reconstructed inside a museum. Its story later intersected with twentieth-century German history. Architect Albert Speer acknowledged that the Pergamum Altar had influenced his architectural thinking, including the design of monumental political spaces associated with Nazi Germany. But the message of Pergamum may go deeper than architecture or archaeology. Revelation also warns about compromise, influence, power, and the danger of allowing corruption to develop from within a community. The mystery of Satan’s throne may therefore involve more than one ancient monument. In this documentary, we follow the trail from ancient Pergamum and the Altar of Zeus, through archaeological discoveries and the monument’s journey to Berlin, to the deeper warning contained in the Book of Revelation. Was the Altar of Zeus actually “Satan’s throne”? Was the phrase connected to imperial worship? Or did Jesus use the image to describe something broader about power, compromise, and spiritual loyalty? Watch until the end and decide what the evidence suggests.
