Description
In 327 BC, Alexander the Great faced one of the most extraordinary challenges of his campaign in Central Asia: the seemingly impregnable Sogdian Rock.
Perched high above steep cliffs and rugged mountain valleys, this fortress appeared almost impossible to capture. Cavalry could not charge up its slopes, and conventional siege tactics offered little hope. According to ancient accounts, the defenders even challenged Alexander to find soldiers with wings.
Alexander’s response became one of the most remarkable stories of his military career. He reportedly selected experienced climbers to scale the cliffs under cover of darkness, using ropes and iron tent pegs. When the climbers reached the heights above the fortress, the defenders faced an unexpected threat from the very terrain they had trusted to protect them.
But how much of this dramatic story is historical fact?
Ancient writers, including Arrian, Curtius Rufus, and Plutarch, preserve accounts of Alexander’s campaigns, but some details surrounding the Sogdian Rock episode remain uncertain. The story of the climbers, the exact numbers involved, and the defenders’ response should be understood as reports from ancient sources rather than independently verified facts.
This is the story of courage, strategy, mountain warfare, and the extraordinary risks taken during Alexander the Great’s conquest of Central Asia.
Watch until the end to discover how a seemingly impossible fortress became part of Alexander’s legendary military history.
