Description
How One Experimental Plane Started the Jet Age
How did the first jet-powered flight lead to the modern aircraft that carry millions of people around the world today?
On August 27, 1939, a small experimental aircraft waited on the runway at Rostock-Marienehe, Germany.
It had no propeller.
The aircraft was the Heinkel He 178, powered by turbojet technology developed by Hans von Ohain.
Test pilot Erich Warsitz opened the throttle.
The aircraft accelerated down the runway...
and took off.
The Heinkel He 178 had successfully flown under turbojet power, demonstrating that a jet engine could propel an aircraft through the sky.
The Jet Age was beginning.
But Germany wasn't alone.
In Britain, Frank Whittle and Power Jets continued developing their own turbojet technology.
Their work led to the Power Jets W.1 engine and the experimental Gloster E.28/39.
On May 15, 1941, test pilot Gerry Sayer took the E.28/39 into the air at RAF Cranwell.
Britain now had a successful jet-powered aircraft of its own.
But another question remained:
Could jet engines power practical military aircraft?
Germany developed the Messerschmitt Me 262, a twin-engine jet fighter that became the world's first operational jet fighter during World War II.
Britain also introduced the Gloster Meteor.
The jet engine was no longer just an experimental technology.
After World War II, jet propulsion developed rapidly.
Engineers pursued more thrust, better materials, improved reliability and greater efficiency.
Then jet technology moved into commercial aviation.
In the early 1950s, jet-powered passenger aircraft began carrying civilians and dramatically changing long-distance air travel.
Over the following decades, early turbojets evolved into increasingly efficient turbofan engines.
Today, turbofans power most large commercial passenger aircraft.
Modern jet engines are far more advanced than the machines developed by Frank Whittle and Hans von Ohain, but the fundamental principle remains recognizable:
Pull air in.
Compress it.
Burn fuel.
Accelerate gases backward.
Create thrust.
