Description

Oumuamua It was the first object ever confirmed to have come from beyond our solar system, and for a few weeks in 2017 it was the strangest thing astronomers had on record. It was discovered in October of that year by a telescope in Hawaii, which is where its name comes from, a Hawaiian word meaning roughly a scout, a messenger reaching out from the distant past. It was already leaving when it was found, having rounded the Sun and begun the long fall back toward interstellar space. Its orbit gave it away at once. The path was hyperbolic, meaning it was never bound to the Sun. The object was simply passing through, moving far too fast for the Sun's gravity to ever hold it.
