Description
CONGO | The Journey Into the Darkest Jungle Where No Human Dares to Enter | Wildlife Documentary
The Congo is the darkest jungle on the planet and the deadliest river that crosses it, and in this Wild Dominion documentary we make the whole journey — four thousand seven hundred kilometers from the first thread of water born in the fog-covered mountains to the point where the river sinks into the Atlantic and keeps flowing beneath the sea. Along the way we meet Grauer's gorilla, the largest ape alive, whose society is decided by altitude; the ten-million-strong bat migration, the greatest concentration of mammals on Earth; the forest elephant that engineers the jungle's trails; the okapi, a legend until nineteen oh one that writes its territory in scent; the African grey parrot that calls itself by name; and the black Congo leopard only infrared could count. On the water we face the sitatunga that hides underwater, the hippo and the Nile crocodile — the two animals this river takes — the Goliath tigerfish with great-white teeth, and the elephantfish that build a world out of electricity. We reach the invisible wall of water that split the chimpanzee from the bonobo forever, the newly discovered lesula and the barely known African manatee, and the deadly rapids where no boat can survive — before the river does what no other river does: it plunges to more than two hundred and twenty meters, the deepest river on Earth, a stretch of total darkness where a blind, colorless fish evolved in place and is spat to the surface killed by decompression, like a diver rising too fast. And even then it is not finished, continuing beneath the ocean through a submarine canyon a thousand kilometers long. A river that crosses the Equator twice and never dries, a jungle that manufactured its own hidden fauna, and a dark bottom no human has ever seen.
