Description
In this video, I take you on a journey through every type of solar system in the universe — starting with the familiar, and ending with something that may have been built. We begin with single-star systems like our own, then the red dwarf systems that are actually the most common in the galaxy, and the newborn systems still forming inside disks of gas and dust. From there it gets stranger: compact systems with planets packed impossibly close, resonant systems whose worlds orbit in perfect rhythm, hot Jupiters roasting against their stars, and eccentric systems flung into wildly stretched orbits. Then we reach the systems with more than one sun — binary, circumbinary worlds with two suns in their sky, and triple-star systems. We move into the graveyard next: dying systems where a swelling red giant devours its own planets, white dwarf systems orbiting a dead star, and pulsar systems — planets circling the corpse of a supernova, which were actually the very first exoplanets ever discovered. We finish with the two strangest of all: rogue systems drifting through the dark with no star at all, and finally the engineered system — a star wrapped in a Dyson sphere, the theoretical fingerprint of a civilization far beyond our own. By the end, you'll see that "solar system" means far more than the one we call home.
