Description
🔗 Give your home that old house character without buying everything new, with warmer light and furniture worth keeping: https://vanishedrooms .com/
For over a hundred years in Britain, making a candle at home without a licence was against the law. Candles were taxed, rationed, and priced by class, so the candles burning on a dinner table told the whole room exactly how much money the host had. In this one, Charles Ashworth walks through where candlelight at dinner really came from, from the 1709 candle tax to tallow, beeswax, and the spermaceti candle so bright that Britain once used it to define what light itself meant.
Then the strange part. The light bulb arrived clean and cheap and should have ended the candle for good. Instead people built their new electric fixtures to look like flames, and they still do. The reason is not romance. It is the warmth of the flame itself, a low, soft, moving light you cannot buy in a ceiling fixture.
Charles finishes with the plain practice the old houses followed, the part that costs almost nothing. Keep the flame out of eye level. Use unscented candles only. Turn the overhead off. Stand a couple of tapers near a mirror and let the light double. A pair of plain white candles and a mirror you already own will make a thirty dollar table look like it belongs to an old family.
If you enjoyed this one, more quiet deep dives into how old houses did things are posted every week.
