Description

Welcome to Wolf Data, from 1927 to 2026, the men’s 200 metres evolved dramatically as generations of sprinters pushed human speed to extraordinary levels. Early performances were recorded using hand timing and were often contested over both 200 metres and the similar 220-yard distance. World Athletics officially ratified its first men’s 200m curved-track world record in 1951, when Andy Stanfield ran 20.6 seconds. World Athletics Legends such as Tommie Smith, Pietro Mennea, Carl Lewis, Michael Johnson and Usain Bolt subsequently transformed the event. Smith became the first man under 20 seconds with 19.83 in 1968, Mennea lowered the record to 19.72 in 1979, and Johnson produced his legendary 19.32 at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Bolt then ran 19.30 in Beijing in 2008 before lowering the world record to 19.19 in Berlin in 2009, a mark that still stands in 2026. World Athletics This 1927–2026 timeline follows the fastest male 200m sprinter of each year, showing nearly a century of progress in speed, training, track surfaces, footwear, starting technique, timing technology and sports science. ⚡🏃‍♂️🌍 ⛲Sources: ▫️World Athletics Annual 200m Top Lists ▫️Historical Results and Men’s 200m World-record Progression 💻Editor: ▫️Filmora 🖼️Thumbnails: ▫️Canva Countries featured in the video: Jakob Schüller Helmut Körnig Eddie Tolan Christiaan Berger Jim Carlton Ralph Metcalfe Ivan Fuqua Paul Hänni Martinus Theunissen Jesse Owens Ben Johnson Perrin Walker Barney Ewell Payton Jordan Lloyd LaBeach Emmanuel McDonald Bailey Denis Shore Mel Patton Herb McKenley Andy Stanfield Heinz Fütterer Rod Richard Thane Baker Bobby Morrow Ed Collymore Manfred Germar Ray Norton Bill Woodhouse Charles Tidwell Edward Jeffreys Abdul Amu Frank Budd Marian Foik Paul Drayton Henry Carr Edwin Roberts Tommie Smith John Carlos Donald Quarrie Valeriy Borzov Steve Williams Millard Hampton Silvio Leonard Clancy Edwards Pietro Mennea James Sanford Mike Miller Carl Lewis Lorenzo Daniel Floyd Heard Joe DeLoach Robson da Silva Michael Johnson Michael Marsh Frankie Fredericks John Regis Ato Boldon Francis Obikwelu Joshua J.
