From the kitchen to the bathroom, the front door to the long dark winter — every room, every season, one simple way of living.
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
There are 8 things Norwegians do with their cars as ordinary habit that most Americans have never done — and together, they can be the difference between a car that dies at 140,000 miles and one still going strong at 250,000.
But I'll be honest with you first: the average Norwegian car doesn't last twice as long as the average American one. The numbers are actually fairly close. What's true is that each of these habits, done consistently, can add years to any car — and several of them cost nothing at all. And one more honest thing: I spent my working life in furniture, not under a car. Your manual and a good mechanic outrank me on anything specific to your vehicle.
Number three exists in almost every Norwegian town, and no American I've described it to had ever heard of it. Number two is something my neighbours in Minnesota already knew — and almost nobody else in America does. And number one is the thing that actually kills cars in cold countries, and it isn't what you think.
I'm Lars. I grew up in Norway, spent thirteen years in Minneapolis, and came home in 2011. A car, to a Norwegian, isn't something you use up. It's something you keep.
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Tell me in the comments — how many miles is your oldest car on, and what did you do to keep it going that long? And if your father or grandfather had a rule about looking after a car that the rest of us have forgotten, tell me what it was.
That's the Norwegian way.
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
This video shares general habits, not mechanical advice — always follow your vehicle's manual. Never run a car inside a garage, even with the door open, and if you're ever stuck in snow with the engine running, keep the exhaust pipe clear.
