-----------
Every morning, thousands of BMW owners do the exact same thing. The car has been sitting all night, so they start it, walk back inside, pour a cup of coffee, and let it idle in the driveway for ten or fifteen minutes. It feels responsible. It feels like you're being kind to an expensive engine. But on a modern BMW, that routine can quietly work against you. It can dilute your oil with fuel, feed carbon into your intake, and leave the parts that matter most still cold when you finally pull out of the driveway.
And here's the frustrating part. A lot of the people doing this are the most careful owners out there. They're doing what their father did with a carbureted pickup truck forty years ago. The engines changed. The habit didn't.
And before you think this is just a winter video, it isn't. Your engine is cold any time it's been sitting for a few hours, even on a 70-degree day. Winter just makes every one of these mistakes more expensive.
In this video, I'm going to walk you through five warm-up mistakes I see BMW owners make all the time, what each one actually does inside the engine, and the simple routine I'd use on my own car, whether it's a B58, an N55, a twin-turbo V8, or a diesel. Stick around to the end, because the last mistake happens after you've already parked, and it's the one almost nobody thinks about.
