Description

A 68-year-old missed her connection at DFW because she didn't know about the free electric cart service available to anyone over 60. That mistake cost her $320 in rebooking fees. 📖 The book I mention in the video — Ten Thousand Flights Later: howard.myreads.store Most travelers over 60 miss three things at every airport: the assistance codes that unlock priority treatment, the TSA rule changes that let you keep your shoes on, and the single phrase that gets you early boarding without paying $49 extra. Every airline reservation system has a four-letter code field called SSR. The codes you care about: WCHR, WCHS, and DPNA. When that code is in your file, you board in group 1 or 2 ahead of general boarding, an agent escorts you through TSA, and if your connection is tight they radio ahead. The service is free and you don't need a doctor's note. In March 2024, TSA rolled out a rule change nobody talked about: if you're 75 or older, you can leave your shoes and light jacket on in the standard security lane at 86 US airports. No PreCheck enrollment, no $78 fee. There's also a family and medical assistance lane at most major airports that almost none of them mark clearly. When you arrive at security, find the TSA officer managing the lanes and say exactly this: I need additional screening time. Gate agents will waive the first checked bag fee for travelers with documented mobility limitations. You need to ask at check-in and reference the device or the medical need. If your inbound flight is delayed and you miss your connection, and you have a mobility note or assistance code in your reservation, the airline is required to prioritize you for the next available flight under the Air Carrier Access Act. Walk past the gate agent line, go to the Customer Resolution desk, and tell them you need priority rebooking under ACAA. But none of these secrets matter if you book through Expedia or Priceline to save $15. When you book through a third party, you can't add assistance codes to your reservation, you can't request wheelchair service through the airline's system, and if your flight gets canceled the airline will tell you to call the third party while the third party tells you to call the airline.
