Description

My mother never planned a menu in her life and never looked at anything written down. Here are the suppers she put on the table before recipes, built out of whatever was already in the house. I am Barbara Vance and I have cooked in the same kitchen in Piqua, Ohio since 1974. One pound of meat, two cups of cooked starch, three handfuls out of the crisper drawer. White sauce that wears four different hats. A casserole as four layers rather than a named dish. One bowl that is pancakes on Saturday and dumplings on Tuesday. A week of dinners off one bag of dried beans. Then seven suppers that came out of a nearly empty refrigerator on the afternoon before payday. One of them never had a name at all, and I want to see whether you can pick it out. And the last nine cannot be written down in any useful way, because every one of them turns on a sound or a look. One of those my mother could do and I never managed in forty years of trying, with her bowl and her oven and the same flour. I worked out why in the end, and I tell you at the finish. Tell me in the comments what state you are watching from, and the supper your mother made that never had a name, because I promise you there was one. Four years of these written down, failures marked as failures. My daughter said nobody would buy it. I had it made into a book anyway: [LINK] #1950scooking #depressionerafood #oldfashionedcooking #vintagerecipes #southerncooking forgotten 1950s meals, old fashioned suppers, cooking without a recipe, white sauce base, casserole formula, milk toast, tomato gravy, fried bologna, red eye gravy, wilted lettuce salad, cornbread and buttermilk, feeding a family on one income, 1960s home cooking
