Etowah was an ancient Mississippian city that once thrived in what is now northwestern Georgia. From around 1000 CE until the arrival of the Spanish in the 1540s, Etowah grew into one of the most important centers of the Mississippian world, with thousands of people living around enormous earthen pyramids and a massive central plaza.
In this video, Ed Barnhart explores the rise of Etowah, its six earthen pyramids, large plaza, homes, palisade walls, and the natural resources that helped support a thriving ancient city.
He also looks at the remarkable artwork and trade networks found at Etowah, including copper and ceremonial objects connected to the wider Mississippian world. From its origins and periods of growth to its decline, conflicts, and eventual encounters with Spanish explorers, Ed examines the story of one of the most fascinating ancient cities of North America.
The story of Etowah also continues beyond its ancient history. Ed discusses the archaeological discoveries that helped reveal the city, the early excavations that took place at the site, and the ongoing efforts to understand and preserve its cultural heritage.
And toward the end, Ed takes a closer look at a surprising new discovery that could reveal just how far Etowah's connections reached.
