Description

Ptahhotep at the Offering Table | Ancient Egyptian Limestone Relief, Saqqara This beautifully carved limestone relief depicts Ptahhotep, a high-ranking official of ancient Egypt's Old Kingdom, seated on an elegant chair and raising a cup to his lips before a table of offerings. His finely detailed features, striped wig, traditional kilt, and reddish-brown skin tones highlight the remarkable craftsmanship of ancient Egyptian artists. Ptahhotep served as a vizier and senior administrator during Egypt's Fifth Dynasty, traditionally associated with the reign of Pharaoh Djedkare Isesi. The relief comes from his funerary mastaba chapel at Saqqara, near ancient Memphis, and reflects the importance of food, drink, status, and ritual offerings in Egyptian funerary beliefs. Ptahhotep is also traditionally associated with The Maxims of Ptahhotep, a celebrated work of ancient Egyptian wisdom literature emphasizing good conduct, humility, justice, and responsible leadership. Period: Old Kingdom, Fifth Dynasty, circa 24th century BCE Location: Saqqara Necropolis, Egypt Material: Limestone with traces of original pigment Subject: Ptahhotep seated before funerary offerings Disclaimer: This post is intended for educational and historical appreciation.
