Description

Howrah Bridge Its a balanced cantilever structure carries traffic across the Hooghly River without placing support piers in the water. The complete load path runs from the road deck through the floor beams, cross-girders, hangers, upper and lower chords, vertical members and K-pattern bracing. These forces are transferred towards the main towers, anchor arms and massive foundations on the riverbanks. The construction sequence includes sinking enormous reinforced-concrete caissons through soft ground, controlling their descent through internal shafts and securing the anchor arms with steel links and embedded anchor girders. Creeper cranes then extended the cantilever steelwork from both sides without temporary supports in the river. The 564-foot suspended centre span was erected from both sides and aligned using hydraulic jacks. Pinned connections and articulation joints allow controlled movement under changing loads and thermal expansion, while thousands of heated rivets permanently connect the steel members. The hangers, cross-girders, longitudinal members, road slab and footpaths complete the load-carrying structure of this historic bridge.
