How long would it take to reach Mars? Light, a plane, a car and one little rocket race to the Red Planet at its closest point... but Mars won't stand still. Watch how the rocket finally catches him.
Science notes: Real: at the closest possible Earth-Mars distance (54.6 million km, NASA fact sheet) and a constant speed, light takes about 3 min 2 s, a rocket at 40,000 km/h about 57 days, an airliner at 900 km/h about 6.9 years and a car at 120 km/h about 52 years. Mars orbits the Sun at about 24 km every second, so real missions launch when the planets line up (about every 26 months), aim for where Mars will be when they arrive, and take about 7 months (NASA/JPL). Exaggerated for fun: cars and planes can't travel through space, Mars doesn't wait, taunt or run away on purpose, the orbit diagram is a sped-up cartoon, no rocket could sit still near Mars's orbit like ours does, real landers use heat shields, parachutes and engines, and sizes and distances are not to scale.
