Description
My name is Isaac Miller. I am Amish, and I've worked iron in Lancaster County since I was fourteen, in a forge shop with a sweet feed bin twenty steps from the door.
You see a line of ants on the counter, so you wipe up every one you can catch and soak the sill with an eight-dollar spray can. The next morning the line is back. By August you've gone through four cans, better than thirty dollars, and the ants have not slowed down.
Those ants were never the problem. They are errand runners for a colony of ten thousand or more under your foundation, and a colony is one animal. The workers are the fingers. The queen is the heart, and she replaces what you sprayed before your coffee is cold. With certain species, spray splits the colony and one queen becomes three.
My father's rule was slow poison travels far. Ants share food mouth to mouth, from worker to larvae to queen. Borax works slow, over two or three days, so the whole colony eats from one load before anybody drops.
The bait is one and a half tablespoons of borax, half a cup of sugar and one and a half cups of warm water on cotton balls, set right on the trail. A six-dollar box lasts ten years of ant seasons. A quarterly pest contract runs four hundred and eighty dollars a year.
In this video I show you why spraying brings them back, how the bait rides home to the queen, the exact mix, where to set it, why you see more ants the first two days, the peanut butter bait for grease ants, how vinegar erases their scent road, and the spearmint and tansy border my grandmother kept.
I also tell you where it falls short. It is slow, four to ten days, and it will not fix carpenter ants coming out of wet wood.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED
Borax, 76 oz box, about $6
White sugar, half a cup
Warm water, one and a half cups
Cotton balls and jar lids
Peanut butter, for grease ants
Clear caulk, $4 tube
White vinegar and water, half and half
A WORD OF CAUTION
Borax is a poison, mild as poisons go, but a poison. Keep bait lids up off the floor and out of reach of toddlers and dogs, both of whom will eat sugar water without asking your opinion.
Subscribe for the old ways that cost pennies and stay done.
