Description

When the power goes out, most folks reach for a shelf full of batteries and gadgets that quit by the second night. There's an older, cheaper way, and it's already sitting in your kitchen. In this one I'll show you how to build a simple oil lamp out of an empty can, a scrap of cotton, and a twist of wire, then run it on the vegetable oil, olive oil, or even the old grease you've already got in the pantry. One ordinary bottle can light your home for days, for the price of a fast-food supper. I'll walk you through the whole build from the reservoir to the wick, a safer floating version for a child's room, the fuels that work, and the safety rules that keep it honest. Fifteen steps, most of them free. Real light, made with your own two hands.
