Description

eep in the remote regions of Erode district, Tamil Nadu, a team of five traditional honey hunters led by Nandakumar takes on one of the riskiest jobs in rural India. Working across farms filled with thousands of coconut trees, the team searches for natural honeybee colonies and carefully harvests pure honey using traditional methods. Farm owners identify trees containing active bee colonies with ropes, helping workers avoid accidentally disturbing the hives. For the honey hunters, however, approaching these colonies means facing thousands of bees and the constant risk of painful stings. Using smoke from the ground, the team carefully drives the bees away without killing them. The bees then move to nearby locations and begin building new colonies, helping maintain a natural ecosystem and supporting agricultural growth. After the bees leave, the hunters carefully collect the honeycomb and place it into separate boxes for customers. Their honey starts at around ₹1,500 per kilogram, with prices varying depending on the type and quality of honey. Sometimes, they discover exceptionally large honeycombs, which are sold as a whole to a single customer. This is more than just honey collection. It is a traditional skill that demands courage, experience and careful handling of nature.
