Description

In January 1953, a 24-year-old Air Force nurse at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio was assigned to sit through the night with a single patient, at the end of a hospital wing that had been chained shut. It was small, it was gray, and it was dying. For eleven nights she sat beside its bed with her watch pinned to her uniform, and in all that time it never once opened its right hand. On the last night, just before dawn, it turned its head toward her, opened that hand, and showed her something. She kept what it showed her to herself for fifty-seven years, until her own last night in a Dayton hospice, when she told the young night nurse sitting with her. This is the story of a nurse who promised that no one in her care would ever die alone, and a closed fist nobody could open, until the last night. It is a dramatized story: the people and events are fictional, and the visuals are AI reconstructions, but the historical backdrop of Wright-Patterson in the early 1950s is real.
